Why morning routines matter

Is your morning routine setting you up for a healthy and productive day?

Striking a balance between mindfulness and productivity in my morning routine is a continuous goal for me. Many successful individuals attribute their achievements to their morning routines. As I navigate the thrilling yet challenging phase of launching a business, I'm striving to maximize the benefits of my mornings even further.

I've always been fond of mornings and typically wake up before everyone else in the house. For a long time, my mornings were hectic as I attempted to cram too many activities in before heading to work. Eventually, I paused and acknowledged that this approach was ineffective for me. I learned that I needed to ease into the day, which meant being more intentional with my time and waking up slightly earlier.

This adjustment has allowed me to take a moment each morning to step outside and breathe in the fresh air. During this time, I hydrate with a glass of lemon water, brew some coffee, and spend a few moments with my dog. Depending on how insistent my dog is for his breakfast, I either prepare my peanut butter toast right away or wait until after he's been fed. Once he’s eaten and my coffee and toast are ready, I enjoy a designated period of time I've set aside for myself. This is my opportunity to wake up in a calm environment. I mostly like to enjoy re-runs of one of my favorite TV comedies, but I’m also trying to take the time to learn and grow with a Blinklist or podcast. This routine isn’t elaborate, but it effectively sets me up for a more productive and positive day. Without this personal quiet time, I tend to accomplish less.

If you’re looking to find more balance in your morning, start with a simple activity from the suggestions mentioned below and watch how it naturally leads you to the next step in your self-care routine. With time, this can create healthier habits leading to happier days.

  • Hydrate your body

Morning routines are a healthy habit, because they set the tone for the remainder of the day, promoting productivity, stability, clarity and calmness before chaos begins. Here are several reasons why establishing a morning routine is beneficial:

Increases productivity: Starting your day with a set routine can help increase your productivity. It allows you to prioritize your tasks, manage your time effectively, and get a head start on the day.

Enhances focus and mental clarity: A consistent morning routine helps eliminate indecision and procrastination, giving you a clearer focus on the day’s tasks. This can lead to better decision-making and enhanced mental clarity.

Reduces stress: Knowing exactly what you're going to do when you wake up each morning can significantly reduce stress levels. It eliminates the anxiety of having to make decisions about your activities first thing in the morning.
Promotes good habits: A morning routine often involves healthy habits such as exercise, reading, meditating, or eating a nutritious breakfast. Regularly engaging in these activities can improve both physical and mental health.

Improves mood: Engaging in a sequence of enjoyable and fulfilling activities as part of your morning routine can enhance your mood and general outlook for the day.

Better time management: A structured morning routine helps you to manage your time better. You're more likely to respect your own schedule and limits, knowing what you're capable of achieving in a specific timeframe.

Improves sleep patterns: Waking up at the same time every day and having a predictable morning routine can stabilize your circadian rhythm, which can lead to better sleep patterns and overall improved health.

Creates a sense of purpose: Starting your day with a purpose-driven routine can provide direction and a sense of achievement. It allows you to begin your day with intention, making it easier to align your daily activities with your long-term goals.

Enhances self-discipline and consistency: Following a morning routine requires a certain level of self-discipline. Over time, this discipline can permeate other areas of your life, helping you maintain consistency in your habits and behaviors.

Incorporating a morning routine can establish a foundation that enhances health, productivity, and stability throughout the day. It involves consciously choosing to start your day positively and with intent, which can profoundly influence your overall health and initiate a self-reinforcing cycle of developing beneficial habits.
