How is your career impacting your health?
Do you like your job?
When we consider an unhealthy work environment, issues such as sitting for long periods, a bully boss and unhealthy snacking throughout the day often come to mind. However, it is also important to think about passion. Are you working in a position or industry that aligns with your interests and brings you joy?
Many of us spend years working jobs that do not align with our passions. This can happen for various reasons, but it is often an aspect of health that is ignored.
Being dissatisfied with your job can have an impact on your physical, mental and emotional health. You’re more likely to experience:
Increased stress
Strained relationships
Difficulty sleeping
Decreased motivation
Lower overall well being
Leaving your current job may not be an option for you right now. I completely understand this, as I was in a similar position for over 14 years. The timing was not right for me to make a change, but a couple of years ago, I realized that I needed to start exploring new career opportunities that matched my interests so I could be ready if an opportunity presented itself.
I am not suggesting that you should quit your job, but I do want to offer some guidance on how to align your personal interests and values with a fulfilling career. By doing this, you will have already taken steps to prepare yourself for any future job opportunities that may come your way.
Tips to connect your passion with a career:
Assess your interests and strengths: Identify your skills, passions, and values to understand what type of work would bring you fulfillment and satisfaction. Consider what activities energize you and what you excel at.
Consider work-life balance: Look for careers that offer a healthy work-life balance, allowing you to prioritize self-care, relationships, and personal interests outside of work. Consider flexibility in working hours and the ability to disconnect from work during off-hours.
Evaluate company culture: Research potential employers to understand their company culture, values, and policies related to employee well-being. Look for organizations that prioritize employee health, offer support programs, and foster a positive work environment.
Seek opportunities for growth: Choose a career that offers opportunities for personal and professional growth. Look for roles that allow you to learn new skills, take on new challenges, and advance in your career over time.
Prioritize mental health: Consider how a career impacts your mental health and well-being. Look for positions that promote a positive work environment, provide opportunities for stress management, and offer mental health resources and support.
Align with your values: Choose a career that aligns with your values and beliefs. Working in a field that resonates with your core values can bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment to your professional life.
Seek support and guidance: Consider seeking guidance from career counselors, mentors, or coaches who can help you explore career options, identify opportunities that match your interests, and provide valuable insights into finding a healthy career path.
Remember that finding a healthy career is a personal journey that may evolve over time. Prioritize self-reflection, research, and exploration to discover a career that not only supports your financial needs but also contributes to your overall health and well-being.
